Well as usual ski season is underway here.
We have typical east coast conditions. Limited snowfall and cold weather have created hard pack conditions. The season has been filled with one half assed storm after another and the forecast predicts that this cycle will continue. The one bright spot was a 20" last week that almost got us where we need to be. The Sierra Nevadas are still a relatively young mountain range and so unlike the colordao rockies they are steep and rocky. What this means to us is we need significantly more snow to get adequate coverage. Adequate coverage is simply defined as enough snow so you can ski off piste and not have to drop your sticks off for a putex job at the end of every day. On top of the limited snow we are in the midst of a wind event. The strong east wind is not only closing lifts, it is slowly stripping away the little snow that we do have. If there was a way to prosecute the wind, the town of truckee would throw him in the tank for grand theft. But don’t fret it is only December the skiing may not be inspirational, but it still is a lot better than working. |
